My time vs future generations. Saving on carbon

Today I’m doing a simple journey going from my home Uppsala to Stuttgart for a meeting in the Eu project NemoGrid.

No big deal just book a flight add hotel and you are done in less than 5 minutes with bonus programs and nice hotel. The map connected sorting routines creates easy choices,  several sites makes it so easy to fly. But thats a journey costing 324Kg Co2 So to go less fossil than that I choose to go by train for only 16Kg of  Co2.

Sustainable innovation is a somewhat unique company where we try to do the right thing and help in enabling  a sustainable future. Minimizing Co2 is one goal and our policy’s reflects that, flying should therefore be avoided. So when a compulsory EU meeting in Stuttgart I saw my chance to do a change.

So I start my quest to make the train. Google helps me with finding possible routes (not done by any train companies) and I have to separately find and pay for all parts of the journey, not that easy to create accounts in german, compared with all the flight services. I have put done at least 3h to nail down the alternatives and a suitable hotel.

All in all I’m now on a 17h train journey to Stuttgart to save 300+ Kg of Co2. My time vs saving future generations life, cheap price? Would you do the same?

05:11 passing  Arlanda airport

Arlanda airport, train station

So taking the right decision is usually uphill. The smooth systems around flying is so much easier and less time consuming. This post would have ended here jumping off and doing the security check and boarding of a flight airport transportation etc.

But I’m continuing on the train reflecting. That the time spent is more productive and less stress full. Will it be worth it?

06:20 leaving Stockholm on time

Connected power time to work. x2000

Perfect worktime and a short nap. SJ delivers good internet coverage and an ecological healthy bistro. But 10 min late to malmö. Next stop will be crusial Copenhagen with change time of 15 min to my hamburg train. Please prove me wrong …

Late in malmö

and we made it with 2 min excess time. Sustainable innovation office is now on the Hamburg train.

13:35 arriving to Rödby for 45 minutes ferry to Puttgarten on time. This is going like clockwork just finished of a few more work things.

16:36 Darn, connection to Frankfurt missed in Hamburg with just a few minutes. But extremely good service at the platform rebooked instantly for 17.25 arriving an hour later to Hamburg but it’s a direct train and no changes …

Update 21:04 at Frankfurt.

It’s going well and it has been really good quality on the trains with  access to power and internet. So apart from the ferry and extra hour at Hamburg I have been able to work most of the time.  Now it’s just 2h left before arrival at Stuttgart HBF.

23:00 arrival at destination Stuttgart HBF since I new I would be arriving very late I booked a hotel at the station building, good choice.

Hotel at the station good choice

23:50 update: the local beer is really good. I walked around for a while and found a nice place.

Nice local place with good music nesenbach

watt-s is Finalist in openstockholm awards

In the #IoT 4real hackaton we won with the watt-s service connected to a smart wallsocket measuring energy and matching it with the corresponding amount of energy that public solarpanels produce in Stockholm. And we are now one of 6 finalists that in January will compete on how to make  a ”climate-smart Stockholm”

The service watt-s is coming together now and I made a talk on Solforum organised by the Swedish department of energy.

With the service we give everybody a chance to start producing solar energy. We do it in very small portions you can cover the usage from your mobile with just 3 watt-s (Around half a A4 paper).

Why not start you too? register your email as a test user

Microsoft support, scam, still happening

Got a call from USA  +119016827157 a man with Indian accent tried to get me to install ”anydesk” to remote control my computer. Very fun to play along and listen.

This has been going on for so many years. It’s horrifying that they still are doing this and actually getting money from people. Please tell everybody you know that it’s a scam.

Releasing a service for easy solar access

I have for a long time been thinking about a a Solar Energy service that makes it easy for people to take the decision to buy solar energy.

Going solar today is hard, it takes both investment and effort to get it onto your roof. With the  service watt-s You  get solar energy  just a click away. Buy one Watt at a time.

The project ”Watt by Watt” is now running and partly funded by the Swedish Energy Agency.

Presenting for the Swedish Minister of Housing, Urban development and Information Technology

This Tuesday I made a presentation at the Intel  IoT ignition lab in Stockholm.  We where three projects covering smart buildings, smart cities and smart homes. We broad collection of innovative Swedish startups that has large ambitions. We had very rewarding discussions on  the Swedish possibilities and  how to take our entrepreneur out to the international market.

Google summer of code project XMPP-IoT toolkit

Over the summer I have mentored a very good student from Hyderadad Adhish Singla he has without prior skills in XMPP worked with two visalisation tools and extensions to the SleekXMPP package to make it simple to create and use interoperable IoT devices talking XMPP.

What is that? It is a collection of open extensions to the famous well proven standard that has been used in millions of installations and different applications including settop-boxes and chat clients.

XMPP is a perfect suited messaging backbone for IoT since it can federate clients on different domains to ”friend” each other why not friend your neighbours outside temperature if yours is broken?

Any device running XMPP towards any of the other federated servers can talk to any other device, when you have

SleekXMPP python tools for running on devices. Python is perfect for easy programming of smart devices most of medium and high range devises is equipped with python from the start. like Intel Edison, raspberry Pi, Cubieboard, beagelbone and alike.

The code is currently in a branch on github to incorporate your local IO device you create field’s that can be readable or writeable and you start a GPIO python file r on your device and it is accessable as a device on the xmpp network. You can use any account on any on the available servers around just look at

Cordova Client

We have created a Cordova Strophe based client that can be used to view and change values from devices below is a simple example of running the cordova android emulator client and controling a philips_hue lamp available over the xmpp network.

Converse.js Client

to be able to have a webbased viewer we have incorporated the functionality in the converse.js web chat client it has been incorporated in the websiteChat_and_value_example

Talking IoT businessmodels at ITARC 2015

I will be holding a workshop at ITARC 2015 Day one is filled with interesting talks and on day two there is a lot of different workshops  mine is W09 between 13:30 to 17:00 be sure to be there!

Don’t expect to be fed with enterprise architect models and 5 letter acronyms. Now we need to get down to business. I’ve been in the connected devices area since I built a Lego robot in 1988 sorting geometrical figures. So join me on a interesting tour. Perhaps you would end up with a new business in your mind.

Why should you be there?

There is so much happening in the extremely hyped area called Internet of Things. coming to this workshop you will gain knowledge of the main trends, we will look at some of the amazing startups and we will then dive into the pond of  business models.

Finding the technology is one thing, making a business model to accompany it, is another ballgame. How about sustainability and humanitarian goals are they part of your business model?

In three work passes we will make way through the different models around today and together explore the possibilities. In the last session we will elaborate on the energy efficiency area and solve one of the worlds most complex problem. ”Why isn’t there any good energy efficiency services in appstore?”
